Are you a visitor to First Church?
Visiting any new church can be scary. So many questions might race through your head -- What will the service be like? Will I have to do anything I find uncomfortable? What if I can't keep up? What if I look like I don't know what I'm doing?
None of these things will happen when you come to First United Methodist Church. As soon as you walk through our front doors on Third Street, you'll see a Welcome Center immediately on your right. You can ask the person there any question you like about the church or the worship service. If you have children who require the nursery or who will be going to Children's Worship, the person at the Welcome Center can help point you in the right direction.
As you enter the sanctuary, an usher will hand you a bulletin that will have all the information about the service. The bulletin will let you know what songs to sing and where to find them in the hymnal, prayers are written out, and it indicates when to stand and when to be seated.
Here at First United Methodist, we believe that music is an important gift from God. Every Sunday morning, we sing a few songs together, we hear an anthem by our adult Chancel Choir or Epworth Youth Choir, and sometimes have special music provided by one of our handbell choirs, professional instrumentalists, soloists, or other vocal ensembles.
Our Sunday worship is part of what we call a "living tradition," which means that we believe that Christian worship services have been changing and evolving for 2,000 years. We pray prayers and sing songs that are both new and old - some very modern and some very ancient. We believe that the Holy Spirit has been guiding Christian worship throughout history, so we pull from these very deep wells of tradition every Sunday morning.
Holy Communion is offered once a month and Baptisms are held approximately every six weeks.
